Your Ultimate Guide to a Successful Job Hunt, from the HR Lady

Your Ultimate Guide to a Successful Job Hunt, from the HR Lady

Hi job seeker! Perhaps you are considering entering the exciting, yet sometimes stressful world of job hunting. I’d like to invite you to explore some tips that hopefully will make the search a bit less stressful. Whether this is your first-time job hunting or you are simply looking to make a change, navigating the job market can be complex. I've got you covered with a few great tips as you begin this journey.

Before Applying:

  • First things first, let's do a quick self-assessment. Take a moment to evaluate your current schedule and availability. How many hours can you commit to work, and what are your financial needs? What benefits are a must? Understanding your needs will help you narrow down your job search.
  • Next up, polish that resume! Gather your employment history, references (remember to ask permission!), and any relevant experience. And hey, don't forget to have a grammar-savvy friend proofread it for you! But wait, there's more! You'll also need a list of accomplishments, skills, and a compelling story to impress potential employers.
  • Speaking of references, aim for professional ones. I know your mom is your biggest fan, but your future employer wants to hear from someone you've worked with or for. Trust me on this one.
  • Embrace the digital age. You may have noticed, job hunting has gone digital.  Gone are the days of mailing or dropping off resumes.  Job search engines have made finding and applying for multiple jobs easier, so embrace it.
  • Networking is key! Talk to friends, family, and neighbors about job opportunities. You never know who might have the inside scoop on the perfect job for you. Don't underestimate the power of networking. Reach out to your contacts and let them know you're on the hunt for a job. You never know who might have a lead for you.
  • Social media check. Yes, employers do check out your social media. Is it right, that’s a question for another day. Make sure to give your profiles a quick once over or adjust those privacy settings accordingly.
  • Keep it professional. Oh, and don't forget to create a professional email address for all your job-related correspondence. It's the little things that count!
  • Keep it organized. I’d suggest finding a way to keep track of the jobs you are interested in and apply for. A Google sheet will do just fine. This will help you remember what you’ve applied for too and any questions you might have if you get the call.

Gone are the days of mailing or dropping off resumes.  Job search engines have made finding and applying for multiple jobs easier, so embrace it.

Ready to apply? Here we go!

  • Before you start firing off applications left and right, take a moment to carefully read job postings. Make sure the schedule works for you, and you meet the experience requirements.
  • If you're dropping off a resume in person, remember to be professional. Leave your entourage at home and walk in as the confident job seeker you are.
  • Absolutely do not be afraid to follow up after applying. A quick phone call can go a long way in showing your enthusiasm for the position.

Remember, it's not just about what the job can do for you, but what you can do for the company.

Let’s Interview!

  • You've landed an interview – congrats! Now it's time to prepare. Research the company (trust me, they will be impressed), Google some commonly asked interview questions and practice, practice, practice those answers in advance! Once you get to the interview and the nerves hit, you will have that practice to lean on.
  • Remember, it's not just about what the job can do for you, but what you can do for the company. Focus on how you can contribute during the interview.
  • Prepare some questions in advance, so you don’t forget to ask. As for what questions to ask, well, that could be a whole other blog post in itself! But for now, just make sure to come prepared with inquiries that will help you gain a better understanding of the role and company culture.
  • And don't forget the basics: arrive on time, turn off your phone, and bring along a copy of your most up-to-date resume. Remember, it’s the little things.

Job offers time!

  • Yes, you nailed the interview and you got the offer!! But, before you celebrate, make sure you understand the terms of employment, including pay and benefits.
  • Be prepared for any additional testing or screenings required by the company, such as drug tests or background checks.

And there you have it, folks! With these simple tips in your back pocket, you're well on your way to conquering the job hunt like a pro, straight from the HR lady!
