Updated for 2026
Whether you're buying your first home, moving to a new one, or re-entering the housing market, the costs of a down payment and closing fees can feel overwhelming. That’s why Heartland Credit Union is proud to share an opportunity that helps make homeownership more attainable through the Homeownership Possibilities Expanded (HOPE) Grant.
What is the HOPE Grant?
The HOPE Grant provides up to $5,000 in assistance to help cover down payment and closing costs, making it easier for qualified buyers to take the next step toward owning a home. This program is designed to support a wide range of homebuyers and is not limited to first-time buyers.
One of the biggest benefits? The grant is fully forgivable when you live in the home for at least five years without refinancing—meaning you won’t have to pay it back if program requirements are met.
Who can apply?
HOPE Grants are available to households earning at or below 115% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and are intended for buyers who may not qualify for other assistance programs but still need help with upfront costs. With approved credit, qualified buyers can take advantage of this valuable opportunity to make homeownership more affordable.
When and how to apply
HOPE Grant funds for 2026 will be available beginning March 16, 2026.
Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, so early preparation is key.
If you’re planning to buy a home this year, now is the perfect time to start the conversation and see if you qualify.
Take the next step
Homeownership may be closer than you think. With the help of a HOPE Grant, you can move forward with confidence and reduce the upfront costs of buying a home.
